October 2008 Extra
  1.
A listener has noticed that the high and low bandwidth links (not the files or RSS feeds) were missing from more recent show notes. That's because I introduced a mistake in my website updating script when I started to add more details to the show notes. I've added back links to the alternate versions (along with file sizes so you can see how much you'll be downloading) in the left-hand column on the January show notes. Is this format OK? Let me know what you think.

Also, are there any ways that the show notes can be improved? Any suggestions that don't require too much extra effort on my part are welcome :-)

I'm contemplating doing a bit of a tidy up and re-jigging of the Jodcast website and I want your input. Are there things that frustrate you about the site? Could anything be clearer, could some things be in more obvious places? If you have any suggestions let me know here.

Dear loyal listeners, if you want a peek at my current ideas for the Jodcast website, have a look at http://www.jodcast.net/test2.html and http://www.jodcast.net/test3.html. The largest superficial change is that it is darker than the current site. I hope this helps draw more attention to the show notes part of the page. The section that contains the download links has been expanded and moved over to the right-hand side of the page rather than the left. Another change is that the show notes for both the video and audio episodes are now more consistent with the same size banner cover art at the top of both.

Does anyone have thoughts on this potential new look?

    Yep, I like it Stuart.
Just one thing , in the comments section, the grey text “how many days ago” after the poster’s name could be a bit darker in my view (same as the current web pages), saying that I do have an old monitor so worth seeing if anyone else thinks the same before making any changes.
But over all I like the changes.

Test2 is nice and quick and does bring the eye to the notes, I like the play button and image placement and size.
Test3 did take some time to load, due to the top Q-time plugin and this image over laps the downloads and options section. i think you need to bold the transcript name to liven it up and seperate the change of person.
you could shrink the downloads and options section a touch
I'll have a look on the iphone to and let you know later.
Its nice to be involved ;-)
    Thanks Stuart

    Thanks for having a look.

@EarthUnit I've made the grey text a bit darker.

@Jodatheoak Have another look and see if the video page looks better now; I think I left some incorrect numbers in for Internet Explorer users. I'm not sure I know what you mean about the transcript names as they are bold and there should be a gap between the people.

@RapidEye Test2 and test3 should be the same ;-) They should just show how the audio and video show pages look.

A new front page look can be seen at http://www.jodcast.net/test1.html

Just a quick note on the video. The website will try to use the new HTML5 video tag if the browser supports it. If it doesn't, it will try to display a Quicktime version of the video. If there is no Quicktime plug-in present it tries Flash. If there is no Flash it should just show a static image.

    Hi Stuart,
test3 is as you have said, I change the zoom on my machine quite often and that changes the text size and some content...the QT box on 125% gives the controls but a 100% does not, gota love IE for messing with the lay out Grrr
Both test 2 & 3 content (audio and video) work brilliantly on the Iphone and the laptop...I do prefer to listen and watch with in a page.
I did notice that if you listen to The Jodcast in the page while reading the show notes, if you click the links it open in the window you are in and the audio stops, but if you right click and open in a new tab the audio continues...I suppose this is more of a tip
Like the new layouts a lot
