why do people (whether they are into astronomy or not) seem to like looking at pictures of spiral galaxies, If this is a human wide thing, why should we have evolved to fined these pictures pleasing. Anyone any ideas ?

Well done odatheoak, the golden spiral (spirals in nature) / Mandelbrot, it’s a lot more scientific then the way my thoughts were going. I was thinking more along the lines of remembering when I was a little kid and watching the water go down the plug hole in the bath :- ~

Cheers for that, you have renewed my faith in science lol

And thanks to Leloup, now that’s more like the one I was looking for, I knew I had seen it somewhere. It was a galaxy taken in I think 3 different filters and you can see the halo objects. Finding it will be my project for the weekend :- )

@yodatheoak No problem as long as you don't start selling it ;-) Most of the Jodcast is Creative Commons BY-NC-SA. The exceptions are the Greenwich videos because we had to agree to BY-NC-ND.

    @EarthUnit It's a Spitzer/Hubble combination. See http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap070121.html

Cool! Thanks. You've got me thinking about how it would look if all the cover art was grouped by subject with the telescopes at the bottom and the most distant things (the cosmic microwave background) at the top.

Stuart I've been having a think about your Jodcast images, telescope to distance...i don't know how skillfull you are at webmastering but...if you use sliding images that change with the telescope at the bottom that would be damn Cool to view.
I will have a look around to see if there is anything similar...or just ask one of the guys I know about it...

    Hi All,
A friend is loaning me for 6 months an Orion europa 250 (10" Mirror) telescope and i was hoping to take some photos with it...Help!
I'm not that familiar on the equipment I'd need to do this and any help would be great.
I have a Nikon d40x, and a t-mount adaptor - not sure if the telescope is motorised.

I feel quite giddy about it.

Most Newts, unless specifically designed for astophotography don't have enough "IN" focus to reach focus at prime. So you usually have to us a barlow of some sort to reach focus. If you aren't motorized, the best you'll be able to do is fast (1/250th and faster) shots of the moon or sun (with the right filter).

I tried taking some shots a couple of years ago with my 10" F/5 dob and digital DSLR - the only thing that came out was the moon. They came out really good (once I got focus nailed) but without a tracking mount, you are really limited.

    G'Luck!

    Thanks Rapideye
I think it is motorised, but if not I'll get one I'm sure it will be worth the cost. a guy on flicker mentioned the fosusing, but said it may depend on the focusing mechanism - I have a barlow for another telescope i have not sure its any good, but I could alter that.
Found my spot to take it - Mam tor - it's only 20 mins in the car and I could setup a windbreak around me.
I'll try and post a message when I'm going so if any of you are near by you can come too.

Nice picture of Jupiter and moons Jodatheoak! If you took many over the course of a night you could make a really nice animation. Here's one I made with my friend Chris Wareing from the middle of Manchester on November 8/9 1999: http://www.jb.man.ac.uk/~slowe/optical/images/jupiter_moons_large.gif

I was completely wowed by Orions nebula and Mars looked great, but the images are a out of focus and hold little detail.
I can appreciate other amature astomomers work on images of the heavens, now nowing all that's stacked against you getting a good set of images to combine and tweak.
The techical know how was great to understand and use. I only hope that I can get a eqitorial mount for my camera in the future to continue.
Its funny how some basic equipment can also give you great results.
